Reading is highly valued at Great Dunham; we hope to encourage and foster a lifelong love of reading in our pupils, by supporting and building on their reading journey throughout their time here.
At Great Dunham we use Read, Write, Inc to support our teaching of phonics and reading. The programme is used in Reception, Year 1 & year 2 & with some Year 3 children. This is supplemented by Oxford Reading Tree resources. The children are encouraged to take home reading books from their first day at school. Daily reading is part of the homework expectation for all the children in school.
Children read independently, with an adult, in pairs and small groups every week in school. Class stories are shared on a daily basis to encourage the children to engage with high quality texts and develop a love of reading.
Each class visits our school library once each week and they are encouraged to borrow reading books, fiction and non-fiction, to share at home. We also visit Dereham public library and are encouraging the children to become members and borrow books regularly. The children take part in the Summer Reading Challenge set up each year by the public library.
