What is the Sports Premium?
Sports Premium is issued by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school Headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.
Each school will receive £16,000 plus an extra £10 per pupil each year. The provision for Great Dunham that will be around £16,660 a year. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.
Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools.
- The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
- The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
- Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- Increased participation in competitive sport
- The overarching aim for P.E in the National Curriculum is to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time
- Engage in competitive sports and activities
- Lead healthy, active lives
We want to ensure P.E taught at Great Dunham is engaging, exciting, empowering and challenging. And that it is successful in planting a life-long, positive legacy in the children here, so that they choose to continue to lead physically active and healthy lives in the future.
Our aim is to give children a positive experience of physical education; this will impact hugely on their well-being and therefore their learning, progress and leave a lasting impact for their future.
We are part of the West Norfolk and Dereham School Sports Partnership and as a result will be able to actively participate in a wider range of sports festivals and competitions throughout the year.
We employ specialist sports coaches to work alongside and enhance staff professional development for one hour per week with each class. They also provide a range of weekly after school clubs.
In line with national curriculum requirements by the end of KS2, children should be able to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Any children in Y6 not meeting these requirements will be offered catch up sessions.
